Inspiring Women in Construction
Women in Construction Week is a great opportunity for us to acknowledge what we know to be true throughout the year: Not only do women make significant contributions to our industry, but opportunities abound for many more to help improve our nation’s infrastructure.
Historically the construction industry has been dominated by men, but we are proud to see changes happening. According to ENR, only 9.1% of those working in construction are women. While that is up significantly from just a few years, we know there is still a long way to go.
We see Women in Construction Week (March 1-7) as a chance to recognize the dedication and hard work of women who fill many important roles at Michels and in the industry. More importantly, we hope to intrigue and inspire others by sharing insights and advice from some of the women who work among us as vice presidents, project managers, engineers, estimators, safety coordinators, equipment operators, field laborers and more.
Throughout the week, we will use social media to share a few of their stories. It is obvious these women have the same goal as their colleagues: to uphold Michels’ reputation, to being part of a great team, and to maintain the health and safety of those around them.
Need proof? Meet Amanda Kerr, an engineer with our tunneling group. Amanda had the incredible honor in 2019 of being named Young Tunneller of the Year by the International Tunneling Association. Not only was she the only female among the five finalists, but she was the only one from the United States. Read more about her prestigious award here.
When we asked her to share her proudest moment, we thought we knew the obvious answer. We were wrong: “I am the most proud of how I handled the first time I had an entire shaft excavation to plan and execute,” she said. “I was faced with a lot of situations that I had not been exposed to before, but ultimately I buckled down and figured out how to get it all done several months before it was needed!”
Spoken with true Michels spirit, Amanda!
