Past projects inspire the future
A Michels Power, Inc. team is using lessons learned on past projects to educate and inspire the next generation of energy and infrastructure leaders.
Glenn Thompson, General Manager, East Underground Line and Cable, and Chris Deschane, General Manager, Mid-Atlantic Transmission and Distribution, were recent guest lecturers for about 20 students in a Construction Engineering class in Bucknell University’s Civil Engineering program. They shared experience on several projects, including the horizontal directional drill and installation of an underground 115kV conduit system.
The discussion included many important details contractors complete before putting any equipment to work, including estimating, putting together a proposal, and developing safety and hazard mitigation plans.
“Our goal is to raise awareness among students and faculty of specialty infrastructure construction and opportunities for a challenging and fulfilling career outside of traditional engineering and vertical construction,” Chris said.
The virtual lecture is just one example of the important role of education at Michels. Each year, Michels invests an average of $5,000 per employee on training, supports a scholarship fund, and engages in outreach to engage and educates students at all levels from elementary through college about the industries in which we work.
