The Business Development Manager is responsible for identifying and creating strategic business opportunities to drive the company’s growth, with a focus on the strategy delivered by the Business Development Committee (BDC). This role requires a dynamic individual with a proven track record in cultivating and managing relationships, understanding market trends, and developing innovative strategies to enhance business prospects. This position will be based out of Calgary, AB, Canada.


  • Maintain and promote a strong safety culture for all employees, vendors, and customers and follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulations. Identify and communicate workplace hazards and correct or seek assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions. Stop work in the area of an identified health or safety problem until resolved.
  • Identify projects, partnerships and acquisitions by leveraging existing networks and identifying opportunities with current clients. Assess overall potential and collaborate with senior leadership to establish a business development plan with specific objectives.
  • Participate in business development activities by conducting market research, developing, and enhancing relationships with existing clients and identifying new target clients that align with the strategy presented by the BDC.
  • Maintain close contact with external stakeholders such as consultants, external professionals, and associations to identify and develop business referrals. Actively engage in social settings such as luncheons, dinners, hockey games, golf tournaments etc.
  • Manage the full cycle for all business leads. Demonstrate consistent and concise communication with stakeholders, while effectively managing business development database, and other mandatory corporate data systems and tools to maintain operational efficiency. Follows up in timely manner and takes initiative to advance relationships through social networking opportunities.
  • Collaborate and assist in developing a true-value proposal consistent with guidance from the BDC, for prospective clients by identifying their business climates, challenges, strategic needs, and pain points.
  • Conduct weekly semi-formal update meetings for leadership to share market insights and opportunities and marketing strategies. Collaborate with team to identify value added solutions to increase market share growth or new market opportunities in key regions. Ensures internal processes effectively support the business development efforts by reviewing and maintaining a continuous improvement mindset while adhering to organizational policies.
  • Proactively identify industry events such as trade shows, networking events, association meetings, public sector, or community development meetings, and participates in person or virtually. Consistently represents Michels Canada as the #1 service provider for all Pipeline and Facilities construction, integrity or maintenance services, while cross promoting the other business units.
  • Capture, organize and maintain a high volume of external market intelligence information. Ensure database captures critical and key information. Accountable for consistency, and quality of data capture to enable a smooth stage gate process.
  • Lead by example to maintain and promote Michels Canada’s culture and core values by complying with Michels Canada Standards and Policies. Lead team members by fostering constructive and effective professional connections, establishing trust and giving/receive candid and fair feedback, and demonstrating both competence and character, inspiring confidence in those you work with.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • 5+ years of experience working in construction sector, Business Development
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, engineering, or related field
  • Strong technical background in pipeline and industrial facility related projects across Western Canada
  • Flexible to travel up to 25% of the time across Western Canada.
  • Possesses a valid passport and driver’s license.

  • Experience with clean energy, oil & gas, facilities, electric power and hydrogen. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and ability to interpret technical specifications and industry terminology.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, SharePoint, CRM Platforms, Shared drivers, and/or cloud-based software.

  • Must be able to communicate verbally and through written language (by hand and digitally) in English.
