Michels and military win with ESGR program

Many Michels employees go far. For one, the sky was literally the limit.

Ben Simon, Manager of Solution Development, had the honor of participating in a “Boss Lift” as part of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Committee (ESGR) program. The event included experiencing a midair refueling of F-35 fighter jets—something seldom experienced by civilians.

Fortunately for Ben, Amanda Brach, a Business Intelligence Analyst on his IT team, is also a Chief Warrant Officer 3 in the Wisconsin Army National Guard. She nominated him for the Boss Lift not only as a thank you for hiring a reservist, but also for being an excellent supervisor over her past year and a half at Michels.

Both Ben and Amanda see ESGR, a program designed to encourage employers to hire active military personnel, as a win-win for Michels and the military.

“Enlisted people tend to have great leadership skills and dependability, and Amanda is very organized and task oriented. She is a good communicator who doesn’t let things fall by the wayside,” said Ben. “Then Amanda can take the knowledge and skills she has gained at Michels back to the military.”

Michels joined the ESGR program years ago, pledging to provide the tools needed to effectively manage our people who serve in the Guard and Reserve; appreciate the values, leadership and unique skills service members bring to the workforce; and support our country’s service members and their families in peace, crises and war.

The military has been important to Michels since its earliest days when our founder, Dale Michels, a U.S. Army veteran, adopted the military’s principles as foundational blocks for the company. Today, the Michels Family of Companies has more than 270 employees who self-identify as active reservists or veterans.

“Right away it was pretty obvious that Michels is very supportive of the military,” said Amanda, adding that coordination for drill weekends, annual training and her other military obligations has been seamless. “Plus, there is something like four veterans working down the hall.”

While Ben’s Boss Lift might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him, current and future reservists will continue to thrive at Michels through the ESGR program.
