Airway Heights HP Reinforcement

Michels Utility Services, Inc. constructed 15,865 feet (3.3 miles) of 12-inch steel high-pressure natural gas pipeline. The new line reinforces an existing 8-inch line serving an area experience significant light industrial expansion. The installation was mainly completed by open trench using rock breakers due to rocky ground conditions. Horizontal directional drills (HDD) were completed in five locations spanning a total of 1,846 feet.

The most significant challenge was working in and around Spokane International Airport. The pipeline route crossed four incoming and outgoing arterial roads to and from the busy airport. HDD was used to cross the four roads and one wetland on airport property. Constant communication with the Spokane Airport was necessary to avoid interference with vehicular traffic. The project was also in close proximity to Fairchild Air Force Base.
