Scope
Michels installed 64 micropiles to construct a deep foundation system for an existing parking garage. The parking lot had a shallow foundation and was experiencing settlement.
Although a foundation system had already been selected for the project, Michels redesigned it to include lower capacity piles that utilized stock material and a more practical installation procedure. Michels used three drill rigs to install the new micropiles.
Through value engineering and the size of its equipment fleet, Michels was able to lower the cost of the project, decrease material lead time and expedite the installation of the new deep foundation system. As a result, the parking structure was put back into service in a timely manner and future damage to the facility was avoided.
Michels installed 26 micopiles with a 275 Kip capacity and 38 micropiles with a 100 Kip capacity. One micropile load test was performed for each of the designs. Both tests were completed successfully.
