Scope

Michels Construction, Inc. designed and installed a 500-linear-foot sheet pile wall with three levels of tieback anchors for a permanent earth retention system. This earth retention system allowed the construction of parking structure for Children's Hospital. A temporary earth retention system comprised of H-pile/ wood lagging, sheet pile and tiebacks was designed and constructed to facilitate the construction of a mechanical room.

Sheet pile was installed with an ABI machine and ABI vibratory hammer. Prior to the sheeting installation, Michels used the ABI with a pre-drill attachment to pre-drill the sheet pile wall at each interlock location. Three Klemms were used to install the tiebacks.

Michels scope of work is to install 242 drilled shafts to support the piers for anew bridge. The installation of the drilled shafts was completed with the simultaneous use of up to four drill rigs. Utilizing barges, 233 drilled shafts were installed in the river. Michels crews also installed 7-foot and 10-foot permanent steel casing into bedrock for each shaft.

Michels installed various forms of earth retention systems using steel sheet pile, secant shafts and drilled shafts. The customer required deep foundations in an area with a high water table. The earth retention systems Michels installed allowed crews to pour the foundations in a dry working area.
