Des Plaines Dam Removal

Scope

Michels Corporation removed the Wright and MacArthur Woods dams on the Des Plaines River, and stabilized and restored the associated banks. The dams were causing a decline in habitat quality by deterring natural movement of fish and altering normal river flow regimes within the river channel. Michels installed a temporary inflatable cofferdam system upstream and downstream of the dams; removal and disposal of approximately 30 foot-long, 2.5-foot-tall and 145 foot-wide reinforced concrete dams and associated 12-foot tall sheet pile cut-off walls; installation of material for channel bank and stone toe stabilization; and restoration of access areas with native riparian vegetation. Bypass pumping was performed with water pumped through sediment bags to ensure sediment settled out and turbidity levels were maintained below threshold levels.

Projects

Michels performed a CIPP lining project for the Metropolitan Council in Minnesota. The project included the rehabilitation of 3,850 LF of 96" pipe, 144 LF of 72" pipe, and reconstruction of manholes.
