MethodsCaissons Micropiles Shoring
Michels constructed a deep foundation package for the renovation of and addition to a four-story structure to create the Domestic Violence Courthouse for Cook County in Chicago's South Loop. Michels developed a plan to support both temporary and permanent building loads with one foundation system. A caisson was installed close to the existing footings at each of the four columns. A second caisson was installed under the new column on the building addition 15 feet north of the existing north wall. Then a single H-pile was imbedded in each of the two caissons and projected above a permanent grade beam and second support beam was cantilevered to the existing column. In total, the project was reduced from 128 helical piers to eight 8-inch micropiles at two interior columns.
