Scope
Michels Power, Inc. installed 39 drilled shafts and 120 helical piles for a substation foundation. This was done to expand the substation's ability to break down high voltage energy from the transmission lines and provide electricity to surrounding areas in Pawtucket, RI. To install the drilled piers, crews drilled, cleaned out the bottom of the excavation, set corrugated metal pipe (CMP) in the excavation, back-filled around the CMP annulas, set the rebar cage and poured the foundation. The helical piers began with a starter pipe installed with an excavator and torque head, and additional extensions were added until torque was achieved.
The project was located in a tight area, with multiple crews working on-site at one time. Michels Power was diligent with safety precautions as equipment and crews maneuvered around the site.
