Scope

Michels Construction, Inc. performed inbound and outbound structure construction for two separate contracts with IHC Construction Companies and Kenny Construction Company. In total, there were 139 drilled shafts between the two projects, ranging from 42-inch to 72-inch diameter and depths of 14 feet to 90 feet with rock sockets. Additionally, there were six separate earth retention systems ranging from cantilever sheet walls to complex multilevel braced excavations.

Projects

Michels designed and installed an Earth Retention System (ERS) for a new pedestrian tunnel that was bored under three live Metra and Union Pacific rail lines.

Michels installed various forms of earth retention systems using steel sheet pile, secant shafts and drilled shafts. The customer required deep foundations in an area with a high water table. The earth retention systems Michels installed allowed crews to pour the foundations in a dry working area.
