Scope

Michels installed 234 driven piles for the Valley City State University's Center for the Arts. The project site had extensive soft to very soft clays with layers of loose sand that could not support the heady loads on the new concert hall.

The piles were 9-5/8 inches in diameter and were 80 feet in length. Each pile was filled with concrete and had 1 welded splice. Three pile driving analyzer (PDA) tests were completed on production piles to confirm capacity and establish driving criteria for the project.

Michels scope of work is to install 242 drilled shafts to support the piers for anew bridge. The installation of the drilled shafts was completed with the simultaneous use of up to four drill rigs. Utilizing barges, 233 drilled shafts were installed in the river. Michels crews also installed 7-foot and 10-foot permanent steel casing into bedrock for each shaft.
