Offshore wind project named Best of the Best

Several Direct Pipe machines operate on a jobsite.

Michels’ contributions to a 200-turbine offshore wind farm have received the highest honors from Engineering News-Record (ENR). Our work on landfalls and trenchless installations for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project earned the Best of the Best project award in the Energy/Industrial category for 2025.

Two trenchless methodologies were used to construct landfalls and trenchless crossings of environmentally sensitive areas to provide electrical conduits for the 2.6-gigawatt wind farm located 24 nautical miles off the Virginia coast. Direct Pipe® was used for the nine landfall locations, and 10 horizontal directional drillings (HDDs) were performed under Lake Rudee and Lake Christine.

CVOW currently represents the largest wind project in the United States and will generate 2,500 to 3,000 MW of renewable power, enough to power up to 660,000 homes.

Earlier this year, ENR honored Michels with five regional awards, showcasing our expertise and safe execution of important projects spanning multiple industries across the United States. CVOW also earned an honorable mention in Trenchless Technology’s 2025 Project of the Year Awards.
