Dayton Landfill Monitoring
Since 1986, Mi-Tech has been conducting regular environmental monitoring of the Dayton Landfill, an unlined 20-acre solid waste disposal facility that operated from the 1970s to the 1990s. On a quarterly basis, Mi-Tech monitors 27 groundwater observation wells, 30 private wells, six landfill gas probes, 26 gas vents, and one staff gauge.
Mi-Tech was selected to design the landfill closure in 1990. At the time, the closure called for a passive gas venting system and clay cap. In 1996, Mi-Tech tested analyzed on-site monitoring wells and private wells which found volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in concentrations exceeding groundwater quality standards. In response, Mi-Tech implemented a groundwater contamination study and regularly collects data for short- and long-term trends.
Mi-Tech will continue to monitor the landfill until it is eligible for closure.
