Oscillated drilled shafts installed to support earth retention systems for reconstruction of interchange in Chicago

Jane Byrne Interchange

From 2015 to 2021, Michels Construction, Inc. installed oscillated drilled shafts, rock socketed shafts, top of rock shafts, secant piles, soldier piles, micropiles and sheet piles to support temporary and permanent earth retention systems, abutments and piers on the reconstruction of the Jane Byrne Interchange in downtown Chicago. All work was completed on small sites and subject to tight timelines in the busy urban area. The 10-year program was broken into 35 projects. Michels Construction completed eight of the foundations packages.

The reconstruction improved roadway design and operations. reconnected neighborhoods and enhanced pedestrian, bike and transit options.
