Sustainability
Focusing On The Future
The Michels Family of Companies’ commitment to a sustainable working environment for our people, clients, and communities we serve started years before the concept of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG). Our journey continues, all the while maintaining constant focus on the health, safety and social well-being of our people and communities with increasing emphasis on measurable environmental sustainability programs.
The Michels Sustainability Journey is aligned with our Core Values and is spearheaded by our Boards and Executive Leadership for a consistent commitment and advancement of performance and fiscal responsibility throughout the Michels Family of Companies. We are advancing the Michels Sustainability Journey by setting, reaching and strategically evaluating our measurable actions.
Safety
Safety is the cornerstone of our culture. Michels implements best practices to maintain the health, safety and wellness of our highly skilled, diverse workforce.
Environmental Stewardship
We are committed to preserving and improving the environments where we live and work. Michels monitors and manages our environmental footprint by actively seeking ways to mitigate and improve the natural environment, including land, biodiversity, water and air.
Energy Efficiencies
Michels Canada replaced hundreds of inefficient fixtures with high-efficiency light emitting diode (LED) fixtures. Most offices and rooms have photo-sensor switches and automatic turn-off. Shops are encouraged to keep doors open with natural lighting when weather conditions allow and office employees are encouraged to keep blinds open and lights off during daylight hours.
Fuel Emissions and Greenhouse Gas Reductions
Michels Canada continually improves emissions within our construction fleet by replacing assets with Tier 4 engines. In addition, Michels Canada has implemented an idling reduction program that includes the installation of vehicle diagnostic devices and employee training and education. As part of this initiative, excessive idling is reduced on cold climate projects by installing fuel heaters on diesel powered construction equipment, which reduces idle time and can save up to 2.27L of diesel per hour.
Environmental Community Stewardship
Michels Canada employees participate in community activities such as Earth Day Clean-Up programs to promote a healthy and environmentally sustainable future for the communities we work and live in.
Waste Hierarchy
Michels Canada uses the waste hierarchy of prevention, reuse, recycling, energy recovery and disposal to reduce sent to landfills. Our operations teams recycle rubber matting, scrap metal, plastics, paper, cardboard, electronic and obsolete equipment. We often sell equipment and/or parts for repurposing. Michels Canada e-recycle computers, printers, servers, and phones. We also donate IT equipment that is no longer usable to non-profits or small businesses.
People & Governance
As a privately owned and operated corporation, we maintain Board structures and Executive Leadership teams to provide direction and oversight for continuous performance and fiscal responsibility across the Michels Family of Companies. Our policies and structures reflect our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
