Lower Mainland Intermediate Pressure System Upgrade

As prime contractor, Michels Canada installed approximately 20km of 30-inch diameter natural gas pipeline and several smaller diameter lateral offtake pipelines through the densely populated cities of Vancouver, Burnaby, and Coquitlam using open cut and trenchless methods. Six pit stations and five mainline block valve assemblies were installed.

Several trenchless crossings were self-performed as part of the project, including 12 road crossings, two utility crossings, and one creek crossing. Some trenchless crossings were initially designed as open cut; however, due to permit and timing restrictions, Michels selected alternate methodologies to mitigate the public impact and optimize the construction schedule. 2,000 underground utilities crossed without a single lost time incident or service disruption.
