Excavator works from barge to reconstruct seawall on Chicago River

Railyard Seawall Reconstruction

Michels Construction, Inc. reconstructed a half-mile section of seawall along the Chicago River. The sheet pile was installed using two different methods. The first conventional method was a vibratory hammer suspended from one of Michels Manitowoc 10000 crane. The second method included an excavator-mounted vibratory hammer to install the deadman sheet pile.

The riverwall sheet pile and tiebacks were installed using barges on the Chicago River. The deadman, waler and excavation were completed using land-based methods. Crews had to be extra diligent when performing work to ensure existing rail lines and utilities were not affected.
