Michels Canada staff members wore our signature color with special significance on May 5 to commemorate the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
Known as Red Dress Day, May 5 is the day when people of all backgrounds are encouraged to wear red to raise awareness of the human rights crisis disproportionately affecting Indigenous peoples, most notably First Nations, Mètis and Inuit communities, in Canada and the United States. In addition to wearing red, our people participated in a virtual walk/run for justice event to benefit the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, there are nearly 1,200 missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada, although it is believed the number could be much higher. Indigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or missing than non-Indigenous women, according to the 2021 Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People National Action Plan.
Throughout the year, Michels Canada is committed to forging strong relationships with Indigenous peoples and providing opportunities for meaningful careers.
