Preparing paths to the trades

While every career path in the trades looks different, Michels is ensuring that students feel prepared and confident no matter where they begin.

As a sponsor of the Architecture-Construction-Engineering (ACE) Academy at Fond du Lac High School in southeastern Wisconsin, Michels supports the program through ongoing donations and educational assistance. Our partnership with the school exposes students to opportunities in trade fields and helps guide them as they carve out their own career.

Each semester, Michels representatives visit ACE Academy classes to discuss opportunities in the trades. The subjects of their presentations vary, depending on which topics the students are covering and what skills are currently in demand. Students hear from Michels professionals who were once in their shoes, forming a connection and networking.

This spring, we presented positions a commercial driver’s license (CDL) holder could pursue. We provided an overview of CDL licensing, the variety of work available, and the benefits of having a CDL. At the end of the presentation, students explored a Michels bucket truck. We also helped with resume writing and provided interview preparation in addition to bringing in heavy equipment for hands-on education.

ACE Academy students may join the industry as youth apprentices or wait a few years for an internship or full-time employment. Whether they join the workforce now or after finishing high school, completing trade school, or graduating from college, students walk away from these early experiences with the knowledge and confidence they need to begin their careers.
