Michels Construction, Inc. built 99 aggregate piers in two days to stiffen 6-12 feet of unsuitable fill material in the building footprint. The aggregate piers were 30 inches in diameter and installed 8-16 feet deep.
Due to equipment sensitivity in the existing adjacent building, an in-depth pre-construction vibration study was completed. This included field testing at another project site to determine attenuation of particle velocity and frequency with distance from a pier installation.
Michels used hydro-evacuation to locate and protect an existing fiber optic line locate 12 feet deep through the corner of the building area. To avoid conflicts, Michels also worked with the general contractor pre-construction to overlay drawing with planned underfloor utility routing and the aggregate pier layout.
