There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to career paths in the trades, evident by the range of work available at Michels. Nearly 100 students from 16 area high schools got a hands-on preview of what our people do each day during Career Exploration Day.
Held in our corporate yard in Brownsville, WI, students moved through eight stations, each demonstrating a different area of work. They suited up in personal protective equipment, participated in mock job tasks, and got up close to examine our heavy equipment.
At one station, students simulated using a hot stick to restore power. At others, they explored an operating booth for drilling projects, marine equipment, and our fleet of trucks. Our people spoke about their career paths at Michels, their education and training, and how interested students can enter these fields.
Our annual Career Exploration Day not only encourages students to pursue the trades, but also provides a laidback atmosphere to connect with our employees and learn about current opportunities at Michels. At the high school level, students can join the apprenticeship program, where they learn while earning a paycheck. For students who choose to enter the workforce upon graduation, Michels offers training and career advancement opportunities.
We also provide internships as early as freshman year of college. This summer, Michels will welcome more than 300 interns—and the program is expected to continue to grow. Not only do students gain skills while working on real projects, but many travel to jobsites around the country. We ask many of our interns to return the following summer or offer full-time employment after graduation.
