While many construction projects lend themselves to assembly in the field, the fast-paced nature of data center construction requires additional considerations.
To ensure the data center substations we construct are built efficiently, many components are preassembled off-site at Michels’ environmentally controlled Prefabrication Shop. Our team provides a wide range of services, including estimating, technical writing, 3D modeling, material ordering, engineering coordination, kitting, packaging, and shipping.
Naturally, prefabrication is a focus as well. Some of the more common substation components we preassemble are as follows:
- Rigid bus conductor and fitting assemblies
- Cable trays and supports
- Conduit assemblies
- Control enclosures
- Control wiring
- Duct banks
- Electrical cabinets
- Ground grids
However, no two projects tend to be the same, and we pride ourselves on finding ways to improve both designs and processes, customizing each project so that when components reach a jobsite, construction of key structures can commence as quickly and safely as possible. Because so much of the constructability is tested in the shop, our preconstruction services reduce the life cycle of a project.
Emerging technologies, including augmented and virtual reality, allow 2D models to be rendered in 3D for a truly immersive review of components and how they fit into the project as a whole. Quality checks are performed before anything leaves the shop without compromising the goal of getting components where they need to be, when they need to be there, and in a configuration that makes installation swift and safe.
As the demand for prefabrication services increases, we are poised to support other projects beyond data center substations as well.
