Recruiting the next generation of qualified candidates, including the early-career talent of Gen Z, requires reaching young professionals where they are—physically and virtually.
In 2024 Michels representatives attended 37 careers fairs at universities and colleges in 16 states to talk to students about our internship opportunities and entry-level full-time positions after graduation. These interactions provide us an opportunity to gauge a candidate’s technical skills and cultural fit as well as cultivate long-term relationships.
Hand in hand with our face-to-face interactions are social media channels, such as LinkedIn, Indeed and Handshake, an app that connects us to a pool of more than 15 million college students and alumni from 1,500 institutes of higher education. Handshake has been on the job scene since 2014, and many recent college graduates favor this app over alternatives.
By engaging with prospects through the app, we can make connections with Gen Z, finding early talent that will be a good fit for Michels and quickly recruiting candidates across the country. For example, while attending Oregon State University, student Tiara Conn was encouraged to use the Handshake to find internship opportunities near her.
“I discovered that Michels was searching for a Project Engineer Intern and offered flexible hours to work around my student schedule,” Tiara said. “I applied for the internship on Handshake and promptly received an email from a recruiter at Michels. Within two weeks, I was on-site for an interview with the project management team.”
Tiara said she has already gained invaluable knowledge and hands-on experience during her Michels internship.
As the job market continues to evolve, our presence at career fairs and strategic use of technology ensures Michels remains competitive by securing the talent we need and staying connected with the future of the industry.
